Rachel
Great list. I like the additions voiced in the comments section (Aaron Strout and Bob Pearson). Glad to see Ant's Eye View included with strong players in this space as we continue to help companies listen and enagage with customers; improving the customer experience.

CV - thank you for your nice words - I think you are absolutely right in terms of some of that challenges that the market in general still has. I think it is critical for there to be more dialog between different functional professionals around the issue of 'socializing' organizations. One of the thing we attempt to do with The Community Maturity Model is to point out that breadth of skills required to achieve results. We want community managers - who are often at the hub of the conversation - to realize that they need a group of advocates from different functions in their organization to really make an impact.

Our hope is that groups like ours and many of the others I've listed here will help facilitate that discussion - even if it's with experts from different functions from other organizations because that can be an easier way to start the dialog. There is much work to be done - and part of it is the culture/language of the experts out in the market... I'm not always sure that the knowledge management, IT, product development, marketing, and support experts spend that much time with each other either. I'm a big fan of multi-disciplinary discussion - especially when it comes to complex systems which humans - and particularly humans in groups - are.

Aaron - right there with you :) Thank you!

Rachel - as we discussed via Twitter, you and I are on the same page (and thanks for the link over to our customer page.

On a macro level, the comments on this post are some of the most thoughtful (and helpful) I've seen in a long time. I especially liked CV's comment because she's right on the money. I hadn't ever thought of it but a lot of folks in the social web space are from either tech or marketing backgrounds (not so in your and Jim Storer's case) but a great observation.

Best,
Aaron

Rachel,
This is a great review that not only gathers important players in one list, with key differentiators, but also suggests a 'movement' that requires a broader skill set.

I note (but don't know the details so I could be wrong) that most of the folks on this list come either from a tech background or a marketing background, so they know about the tools and/or how to use them largely towards the outside.

This makes me wonder where and how these new service providers are learning about the challenges of developing strategy, distributing leadership, and re-organizing organizational structures *not only* to implement these tools but more importantly to link them to an organization's core purpose.

This question comes up again, from a different direction, reading about how/what else is needed to link Web 2.0 with Enterprise 2.0, a challenge highlighted by @GiaLyons' post: "Social Media is from Mars, Enterprise 2.0 is from Venus" (http://bit.ly/LqgtZ)

I think of you as one of those social media people who 'gets' the organization part, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on what (else) may be needed to fill this space.

Hi Tom -

Thanks for adding - Bob definitely has some chops and I will actually go back and add him as a principal at the Social Media Business Council (formerly The Blog Council) above.

One more that could turn out to be a powerhouse - Common Sense Media - the key player here is Bob Pearson - formerly of Dell and president of Andy Sernovitz's blog council.

http://www.csmg.us/

Bob has some chops, having gone through the implementation and change management process through the crucible of Dell Hell.
